Prosecutors to argue search for Bowe Bergdahl led to soldier's traumatic brain injury

Bowe Bergdahl’s general court martial isn’t scheduled until 2017, but attorneys for the defense and prosecution are readying their cases, with the prosecution set to argue that the search for Bergdahl led directly to two soldiers being injured.

Bergdahl, who walked off his post in Afghanistan in 2009 and was held captive by the Taliban until 2014, faces a desertion charge as well as a charge of misbehavior before the enemy. President Obama famously appeared with Bergdahl’s parents in the White House Rose Garden to announce their son’s release, which came at the price of a lopsided prisoner swap involving five Guantanamo Bay detainees.

The Associated Press reports prosecutors will argue that National Guard Sgt. 1st Class Mark Allen was shot in the head and Spc. Jonathan Morita injured by an RPG in search of Bergdahl. Defense attorneys wrote in January that Allen’s injuries were caused by the Taliban and not Bergdahl.

Allen suffered traumatic brain injuries which confined him to a wheelchair and left him unable to communicate.
