Obama excuses firearms offenses if the criminal didn't shoot; Can law-abiding gun owners get a break?

Asked during his Thursday afternoon press conference about the 214 commutations he granted Wednesday, President Obama admitted that “some” of the nonviolent offenders who were granted commutations (more than 50, actually) had been found guilty of firearms violations. However, he made a clear distinction between a drug dealer who had been caught in possession of a gun but didn’t fire it, and someone who might have brandished it during an armed robbery.

So the president is saying that a drug dealer illegally in possession of an unlicensed firearm can be forgiven if he doesn’t shoot anyone with it? In that case, would he consider laying off citizens with no criminal record who would like to legally purchase an AR-15 rifle for self-defense?

Let’s have a look at the list of convicts who were granted clemency and the charges on which they were convicted in addition to drug-related crimes:

  • Possession of a firearm by felon
  • False statement in acquisition of firearm
  • False written statement to licensed firearm dealer
  • Possession of an unregistered firearm
  • Possession of stolen firearm
  • Possession of a firearm with an altered serial number
  • Possession of a firearm with obliterated serial numbers
  • Possession of a firearm not registered in the National Firearms Registration and Transfer Record

Nope, it doesn’t look like any of these guns were obtained or possessed legally. The only solution is to pass more gun control laws, right?

Townhall editor Katie Pavlich didn’t quite buy the idea that a drug dealer or gang member caught with an unfired gun was quite so innocent.

It’s our fault for passing them out to kids like Happy Meals.

If you thought that was a lovely story, how about yesterday’s White House blog post, in which the felon who has been freed can once again attend a loved one’s birthday party, walk his child to school, or simply go to the grocery store. That’s all any of those drug dealers and gang members ever wanted.

Who would stand between a convicted drug dealer and a piece of birthday cake just because of some outdated and unduly harsh sentencing laws?
