MTV's Jamil Smith missed something about the immigrants 'demonized' at the RNC

Melania Trump’s headlining speech Monday night wasn’t quite in keeping with the national security theme of the Republican National Convention’s opening night, but she did tackle head on the criticism that her husband and the GOP are anti-immigrant by sharing with pride her own story of becoming an American citizen.

MTV News’ senior national correspondent Jamil Smith tried to make a point, but either ran out of characters in his tweet or missed a crucial distinction.

Besides the fact that it wasn’t the end of the night, Smith seems to have glossed over the bit where Melania Trump immigrated legally and became a U.S. citizen. And if it’s considered “demonizing” immigrants by specifically calling out those here illegally who may have, you know, killed a police officer, guilty as charged.

Grow up? You’re speaking to the senior news correspondent for the network behind the very mature and issues-oriented “Elect This!” get out the vote campaign, featuring RoboDino. Show some respect.

Still, you can’t really fault MTV for doing its job and sharing the workload with the Democrat Party — that “anti-immigrant” narrative is slippery.
