Weekly Standard editor Bill Kristol has been pushing avidly for an independent candidate to step forward and challenge presumptive Republican nominee Donald Trump, and this holiday weekend, he teased that the name of that candidate would be revealed soon.
Just a heads up over this holiday weekend: There will be an independent candidate–an impressive one, with a strong team and a real chance.

Mitt Romney’s name has been bandied about for a while now to a less-than-warm reception, as has his former running-mate Paul Ryan’s, though both have rejected the idea.
People Bill Kristol wanted to run against Trump:
1. Paul Ryan
2. Michael Bloomberg
3. Ben Sasse
4. Mark Cuban

@DavidAFrench is one of the most brilliant conservatives out there. I hope he says 'no thanks' to Kristol, however.

Journalists scrambled to uncover whatever awful secrets might be lurking in French’s past, but mostly, the press and others raced to come up with the best pun on the possible presidential candidate’s name.
Please tell me there's a strong conservative out there named Fries who is willing to run with David French
— Conrad Close (@conradclose) May 31, 2016
OK, if @DavidAFrench runs, "French fries Trump" would make a great headline
— Mike Nelson (@mikenelson586) May 31, 2016
When he loses, the NYT headline will be "David French, Toast"
