Creator of pasty white 'Girls' says Hollywood has a serious diversity problem

“We have a serious problem,” admitted Lena Dunham recently at the Sundance Film Festival. She very well could have been talking about her campaign partnership with Hillary Clinton, but instead she was referring to a question about the lack of diversity among this year’s Oscar nominees.

The Motion Picture Academy’s president recently admitted the Academy was “heartbroken” and frustrated by its lack of diversity but was taking steps that would “immediately increase diversity” on the Academy’s board. Dunham told E! Online that she’s not heartbroken because there are diverse voices in TV and film, “but what really needs to happen is that people need to take notice and give resources to these voices.” Other people, apparently.

The cast isn’t simply all-white; it’s the definition of white privilege.

But then we’d miss out on her contribution to gender diversity. She was in Sunday for the premiere of her new documentary “Suited,” her new HBO documentary about a tailoring company that designs for people “across the entire gender spectrum.” We can’t wait for the section on pantsuits.
