'I will kill all the blacks': Police say black activist faked threats against black students at Kean University

Police say that threats posted on Twitter last month against black students at Kean University in Union, New Jersey were the work of a black activist and former student.

The Chronicle of Higher Education reports that “online threats to ‘kill every black male and female’ at Kean University were made by a former student and activist in an apparent attempt to drum up support for protests against racism. Kayla-Simone McKelvey, who is black, was charged with a third-degree count of creating a false public alarm after leaving a November 17 rally against racism to create a fake Twitter account in the school library to post the threats.

In a statement posted to the university’s web site today, Dr. Dawood Farahi, Kean University President, said:

We are saddened to learn that the person allegedly responsible was an active participant in the rally that took place on campus on Tuesday, November 17 and is a former student of Kean. As a diverse academic community, we wholeheartedly respect and support activism, however, no cause or issue gives anyone the right to threaten the safety of others. We hope this information will begin to bring a sense of relief and security to the campus community.

Kean remains a place of diversity, of openness to all. These horrible tweets tried to tear us apart and tarnish our reputation, but they have failed. We continue to be united – working together always – in our mission to offer a world-class education to students from all backgrounds.

The student body was to assemble this afternoon for a “conversation” on diversity, communication, and safety.
