Head of EPA, fresh from dumping toxic waste into river, hopes 'we will rise to the Pope's moral call'

Environmental Protection Agency director Gina McCarthy, recently the subject of articles of impeachment accusing her of perjury and making false statements before the House Committee on Science, Space and Technology, is hoping that America will “rise to the Pope’s moral call” to act on climate.

Inspired by Pope Francis’ recently issued encyclical and current visit to the United States, McCarthy writes on her official blog:

Environmental justice is at the core of everything we do – including our work to address climate change. Climate change is personal — it affects every American. But low-income and minority communities are particularly vulnerable to climate-related changes like stronger storms, floods, fires, and droughts. And on top of that, they are often the least able to rebuild after a disaster.

We all have roles to play in taking action on behalf of those who bear the brunt of the effects of climate change. And by working together, we can meet the challenge. This message was crystal clear in the Pope’s recent encyclical:

“Human beings, while capable of the worst, are also capable of rising above themselves, choosing again what is good, and making a new start.”

Human beings are also capable of dumping a million gallons of the toxic liquid into a pristine river and secretly dumping up to 15,000 tons of poisonous waste into a mineshaft. No new start is necessary: no one at the EPA that we know of has been impeached or fired or fined.
