A police officer who yesterday reported that he crashed his car into a tree after a man in a red truck fired a gun at his cruiser will be terminated from the force after an investigation revealed he made up the story.

The story led to an extensive manhunt as well as the closure of schools, libraries and other public buildings in the area in the interest of safety.

The officer in question was taken to the hospital as a precaution but had no injuries. Photos released late in the day of the crash scene showed the police car completely torched.
