Baker's claim of 'freedom of religion' to turn away same-sex couple compared to slavery, Holocaust

You might remember the high profile case in which a family-owned Oregon bakery was ordered to pay $135,000 after refusing to bake a wedding cake for a lesbian couple. The astronomic fine supposedly took into consideration the couple’s physical, emotional and mental damages, which included among others an acute loss of confidence, excessive sleep, the feeling of having been “mentally raped,” migraine headaches, resumption of smoking habit, weight gain and worry.

A similar case was decided in Colorado this week, where an appeals court ruled that Masterpiece Cakeshop owner Jack Phillips had discriminated against a gay couple in 2012 by refusing to bake their wedding cake because of his religious beliefs.

Colorado’s seven-member Civil Rights Commission requires that Phillips provide comprehensive staff training and “submit quarterly reports for two years that show he was working to change discriminatory practices and training employees,” reports the Denver Post.

Phillips appeared last night on Fox News’ “The Kelly File” to discuss his reaction to the court’s decision.
