Twitter had a good laugh yesterday over the New York Times’ “bombshell” report that Marco Rubio and his wife together had accumulated 17 traffic citations dating back to 1997, with the man who would be president flouting the law speeding around in his Ford F-150 sports utility vehicle.
Bloomberg Politics managing editor Mark Halperin for whatever reason decided that he’d be the one to ask the big question:
Those mocking @nytimes story on Rubios' traffic tickets: if the Clintons were exposed having those infractions, would you say the same?
— Mark Halperin (@MarkHalperin) June 6, 2015
Clever trick question. They don't drive. https://t.co/vPqD0kf6TG

.@BillKristol @nytimes Don't they do hypotheticals at Harvard? You know full well the answer to my question, methinks.
— Mark Halperin (@MarkHalperin) June 6, 2015
You know what he meant.
.@MarkHalperin Methinks I would say the same if it were the Clintons. Or the Obamas. Or even Ron and Rand Paul.

.@MarkHalperin @BillKristol @nytimes It's a dishonest question. 1) Bill Clinton iis a former President. Mrs. Rubio is a private individual.
— (((AG))) (@AG_Conservative) June 6, 2015
.@MarkHalperin @BillKristol @nytimes 2) NYT has not tried to blame Hillary Clinton for Bill Clinton's flaws as they did here w/ Rubio's.
— (((AG))) (@AG_Conservative) June 6, 2015
.@MarkHalperin @BillKristol 3) No one would think Hillary Clinton (if she did drive) getting 4 tickets in 18 years = a serious story.
— (((AG))) (@AG_Conservative) June 6, 2015
.@MarkHalperin @BillKristol 4) Clintons have been in real scandals and media (yourself included) has treated tickets as > story than those.
— (((AG))) (@AG_Conservative) June 6, 2015
It’s interesting that Halperin brings up a “hypothetical” yet safely irrelevant hit piece on the Clintons.
In fact, @MarkHalperin, just a few weeks ago you tried diminishing real stories about the Clintons: https://t.co/51JLUc4271 cc: @BillKristol

Yes, this was Halperin in April.
Now is the time when all responsible journalists take a deep breath & separate the real, important & interesting from the feeding frenzy
— Mark Halperin (@MarkHalperin) April 23, 2015
Come on, now, it was an honest question. Let’s treat it with the respect it deserves. Would you conservatives say the same if the traffic ticket story were about the Clintons?
.@MarkHalperin I'd be somewhat surprised, since Hillary hasn't driven a car since 1937.https://t.co/RsMdHoRZdy

.@MarkHalperin @nytimes when Hillary was still driving, you had to have a flagman to avoid scaring horses pic.twitter.com/g3FDOiMRHI
