Benghazi panel subpoenas Sidney Blumenthal to testify; Rep. Cummings alleges GOP grandstanding

Former Clinton White House adviser Sidney Blumenthal made quite a splash Monday night when the New York Times published a number of emails between Blumenthal and then-Secretary of State Hillary Clinton that were uncovered by Judicial Watch. The emails, sent to the very unofficial address “[email protected],” showed Blumenthal advising Clinton on Libya around the time of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks that killed four Americans.

In an email to Reuters, Rep. Elijah Cummings, the top Democrat on the House Benghazi panel, said that serving Blumenthal’s wife with a subpoena was “heavy-handed, aggressive, and unnecessary.”

The Washington Times’ Monica Crowley notes that she investigated the shady connection between Clinton and Blumenthal a few weeks ago, even asking, “Is Mr. Blumenthal on anyone’s subpoena list?”

Screenshots of Clinton emails obtained and released by hacker Guccifer led Crowley to conclude:

It appears that Mr. Blumenthal had moved from handling matters of stained dresses to matters of national security. He suggests he is in contact with the highest levels of foreign intelligence, including in Libya, Algeria and France.

What was the Clintons’ hatchet man really doing? How did he cultivate such sensitive intelligence sources, and on whose orders? Why was he apparently hip-deep in intelligence matters while his close friend was secretary of state?

Hopefully Rep. Cummings can overcome his displeasure over Blumenthal’s subpoena and instead concentrate on those questions that demand answers.
