In Baltimore, Cornel West (again) calls for whites to give blacks a standing ovation

Dr. Cornel West, lauded Ivy League academic and member of the Democratic Socialists of America, was the featured speaker Monday night at a meeting of Baltimore United for Change.

In attendance was the family of Tyrone West, who died in Baltimore police custody in 2013. West’s family cites witnesses who claim West was beaten to death by police; an independent panel, however, determined that West had a history of drug sales, violence, and resisting authority, and an autopsy showed that he died of a heart condition triggered by both the heat and a struggle with police.

Maryland State Delegate Jill Carter spoke on 17 police reform bills she says have been undermined by the police union and paused for a selfie with West.

The Baltimore Sun’s Colin Campbell reports that West didn’t hesitate to spread the blame for the situation in Baltimore.

Speaking of crimes, the Baltimore Sun reports that 10 people were shot on Sunday alone, with three shot to death in a 39-minute timespan, in addition to 10 shot on Thursday, bringing the number of homicides in the city this year to at least 87.

West repeated a line he has delivered in various forms for years and that has proved to be a favorite with audiences, calling for whites to give blacks a standing ovation on sight.

The Rev. Osagyefo Sekou also had instructions for “white allies” in attendance.
