Sen. Cory Booker of New Jersey is famously a vegetarian. (For proof, check out his shopping list when, as mayor of Newark, he took the Food Stamp Challenge to argue for a “just and sustainable” food system in the United States.)
To get there as a nation, lets drop the judgement and do more in support of each other, encouraging, informing, helping AND… @nashveggie

As a policy maker, I believe we should do much less of the massive subsidizing of those foods that make us unhealthy. @nashveggie

A takedown of the Union of Concerned Scientists is worth a post of its own, but today’s controversy surrounds Booker’s next tweet and his use of the word “schizophrenic” to describe the nation’s spending on food subsidies.
America has schizophrenic policy telling us on 1 hand about healthy eating & then contrarily subsidizing @nashveggie pic.twitter.com/QKde4UCtdJ

Booker seems to have taken the criticism to heart, retweeting cautions and complaints from followers.
@CoryBooker Oh please rethink your use of "schizophrenic" as it can be stigmatizing to those dealing with this challenging disorder.

@CoryBooker Schizophrenia is a mental disorder, please don't use that phrase to mean anything else.

@CoryBooker @ZahraTahirah Cory getting told. Well done Zahra. There are other words designed to explain this situation appropriately.

It wasn’t only the use of the word that was up for criticism.
@CoryBooker Cory you are better than this. Misleading as well. 61% of corn is not all eaten by people but livestock.

Subsidies aren’t the only thing allegedly out of proportion.
@CoryBooker @nashveggie First of all, the First Lady's plate is also out-of-whack. There should be more protein than grain.

And much less first lady.
