National Urban League PSAs push Common Core; Teachers and parents push back

Public service announcements co-created by the National Urban League touting the benefits of Common Core State Standards are beginning to make the rounds on TV. Why, here’s one now:

As PSAs, they air without charge, but finding money for their production shouldn’t have been a problem — as blogger and New York University research professor of education Diane Ravitch notes, the pro-Common Core Gates Foundation has granted more than $5 million to the Urban League over the past several years.

The Miami Herald’s Marc Caputo and his wife have taken notice of the ads as well.

As much as we hear about the tear-inducing properties of Common Core math, there’s Common Core writing instruction to deal with as well, and plenty of teachers and parents aren’t fans.

Apparently, African-American parents love Common Core.

Why yes, they do.

Here’s a simple writing exercise: describe Common Core writing instruction in two words.
