As Twitchy has reported, tens of thousands of unaccompanied children from Mexico and Central America have been flooding across the U.S.-Mexico border, and the government is trying to find buildings in which to house them: a Phoenix bus station, an Oklahoma Army base, overcrowded Border Control offices in Texas and more.
Democratic Maryland Sens. Ben Cardin and Barbara Mikulski today voiced their opposition to turn vacant Social Security Administration buildings into shelters. The Baltimore Sun notes:
The Obama administration is considering using the Metro West complex on the 300 block of N. Greene St. to house an as-yet undetermined number of children and families. The 1.1 million-square-foot office complex was vacated by Social Security earlier this year.
Located a few blocks north of the so-called Superblock — a proposed $152 million mixed-use project — the site is considered a potential cornerstone for redeveloping the west side. Local officials want to know how long the site might be used as a shelter and how many people would be housed there.
How many people will be sheltered, and for how long? Our guess is “we have no idea” and “forever.”
In the meantime, Arizona Sens. John McCain and Jeff Flake are demanding answers from the administration over the bussing of illegal aliens to Arizona.
Last week @JeffFlake & I sent letter demanding answers from DHS Sec on transfers of undoc immigrants from TX to AZ: http://t.co/l7vOKVhXTp

In at letter to the Secretary of Homeland Security, McCain and Flake ask how many illegal aliens have been flown or transported into Arizona from other states for processing.
“It is apparent that not all of the illegal aliens flown into Arizona ended up at the bus station;” McCain and Flake observe. “Please describe how illegal aliens are chosen for transport into Arizona, the scenario under which they would be dropped off at the bus station, and the likely scenarios for those who remain in custody in Arizona.”
