'Apparent fetus' found in bag at Victoria's Secret was born alive, possibly drowned

NBC New York reports today that the baby found in a 17-year-old’s bag at a New York Victoria’s Secret yesterday was born alive, and authorities will investigate whether the newborn, who reportedly had fluid in his lungs, was drowned.

As Twitchy reported, the New York Daily News, The Huffington Post and other outlets referred to the newborn in their coverage as a fetus, a baby, a child and a newborn alternatively. NBC New York reports:

The girl told police that she was about six months pregnant and miscarried the baby Wednesday. Police haven’t charged her with any crime in relation to the child, but she and her friend are both charged with petit larceny and criminal possession of stolen property.

The girl, who has another child, was taken to Bellevue Hospital for evaluation.

Even the Associated Press today is using the term “baby” in its reporting, replacing this morning’s description of a “fetus” and, even more amazingly, yesterday’s report of an “apparent fetus.”
