'As difficult as possible': GOP Oversight Committee to look into park closings

Pennsylvania’s Rep. Patrick Meehan says he’ll look into the case of a runner who was stopped by park rangers and fined $100 for ignoring the ‘Barrycades’ around Valley Forge National Historical Park last week and running the open-air trails.

CBS Philly reports that a group of about two dozen runners staged a protest run around the park this Sunday in solidarity with John Bell, who says he’s had messages of support from runners all over the country. “A lot of people died here for our freedom, and now, all of a sudden, you have no freedom to go and use the park and walk through it,” Bell told a reporter. “I understand the gift shop might be closed, the visitor center, the rest rooms, but the outside area, it should be open, the sidewalk should be open.”

Meehan says the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee will meet tomorrow to discuss the barricading of open-air monuments and memorials on the National Mall.

The name of that joint hearing? “As Difficult as Possible: The National Park Service’s Implementation of the Government Shutdown.”
