It's OK if you date a Republican, says Lena Dunham, even though it's like dating a Nazi; Correction: Dunham's character thinks dating a Republican would be like dating a Nazi

Even though she has a popular HBO show called “Girls,” a lot of people weren’t aware of Lena Dunham until she appeared in the creepy ad comparing voting for Barack Obama to losing one’s virginity. Since then, she’s been named one of Glamour’s “Women of the Year” and one of 2012’s “Brave Thinkers” by The Atlantic. But that was last year. What brave thoughts will Dunham share in 2013?

First, that you shouldn’t date a Republican, because that would be like dating a Nazi. In the second season of “Girls,” Dunham’s character “Hannah” will date a Republican, which she just shouldn’t. Ali Akbar tracked down that brave thought from an interview Dunham did with Vulture.com.

Dunham explained that her character, Hannah, will explore her “reverse ignorance” this season by dating a black Republican played by Donald Glover. “We liked the idea of a Republican entering their universe. And Hannah doesn’t really have a clear sense of why you shouldn’t date a Republican; it’s kind of just like the same reason why you shouldn’t date a Nazi: You just shouldn’t.”

Dunham, though, wants you to know that even though dating a Nazi would be a bad thing, she’s totally pro-choice — when it comes to dating. “My personal position is that you should date anyone you want so long as they treat you respectfully and share your value system. So it might be hard for me to date someone who was against gay marriage and abortion rights — I don’t think I would be attracted to them — but I don’t have any personal problem with dating a Republican.”

That’s a relief. In fact, Dunham told the Hollywood Reporter that this one time, she herself dated one. “Actually, you know what, I dated someone who claimed to be a fiscal Republican.” she confessed. “I don’t know what that means really.” Did we mention Dunham was named one of 2012’s “Brave Thinkers”?

Correction: The title and opening section of this post initially suggested that Lena Dunham believes dating a Republican is like dating a Nazi. The post has been amended to clarify that her character, Hannah Horvath, is the one who believes that. We apologize for the error. Here is the relevant portion of Dunham’s interview in which she describes her character’s thoughts on dating Republicans.

Why make him a Republican?
We liked the idea of a Republican entering their universe. And Hannah doesn’t really have a clear sense of why you shouldn’t date a Republican; it’s kind of just like the same reason why you shouldn’t date a Nazi: You just shouldn’t.

Wait, so your position is that you shouldn’t date a Republican?
My personal position is that you should date anyone you want so long as they treat you respectfully and share your value system. So it might be hard for me to date someone who was against gay marriage and abortion rights — I don’t think I would be attracted to them — but I don’t have any personal problem with dating a Republican. I do think that Hannah has this reverse ignorance where she’s like,If they’re Republican, get them out of my airspace, and that was a fun thought to explore.
