John Boehner renominated for House speaker; fends off challenge by … Newt Gingrich?

Surprising no one, Rep. Nancy Pelosi this morning announced that she would remain House minority leader. It seems a shake-up has been averted across the aisle as well, as the House Republican Conference this afternoon renominated Rep. John Boehner as House speaker. Boehner was nominated by Rep. Eric Cantor, who also was renominated to the position of House majority leader.

Though Boehner received a standing ovation from his colleagues, his renomination wasn’t without some drama. Texas Rep. Louie Gohmert surprised many by nominating former speaker Newt Gingrich.

Gohmert later told the Daily Caller, “I just felt like it was time to change business as usual.” That’s not likely, with President Obama, Sen. Harry Reid, Pelosi and now Boehner set to return to their former positions. Many seem to share Gohmert’s desire for a change-up in House leadership, although Paul Ryan seemed to be the favorite choice of those on Twitter. No hard feelings from Boehner, though. Does the man ever harbor hard feelings?

Chin straps? At least he didn’t say knee pads. The verdict now that Boehner’s job as speaker seems intact?
