Cher, Lizz Winstead, Salman Rushdie: Sociopath Mitt Romney would have eliminated FEMA

We’ve already heard from Cher that Mitt Romney is heartless and evil and if he wins the election, she’ll cry forever. It wouldn’t seem there’d be much to add, but with Hurricane Sandy making landfall, Cher wants us to know President Romney would have eliminated FEMA and left states to fend for themselves.

Daily Show co-creator Lizz Winstead, a noted Romney denier, is getting in on the action as well, calling Romney a sociopath for denying claims that he’d “absolutely” disband FEMA.

Why would he deny saying it? Because he didn’t say it. Sure, the Huffington Post reported last night that Romney, asked in the Republican primary debates whether FEMA should be shuttered, responded “Absolutely.” HuffPo even helpfully provides the YouTube video; the only catch, though, is that Romney wasn’t asked whether FEMA should be shuttered — as the video shows, he was asked if the states should take a greater role in disaster response.

The Atlantic’s Jordan Weissmann published his own response to the claim, incorporating the Romney campaign’s statement on the issue: “Gov. Romney wants to ensure states, who are the first responders and are in the best position to aid impacted individuals and communities, have the resources and assistance they need to cope with natural disasters.” In short, yes, states should have a greater role in disaster response.

But you can’t trust a “sociopath” like Romney, can you? Never mind what he actually said; you just know the guy borrowed George W. Bush’s weather machine to start Hurricane Sandy anyway, right?
