Alleged Family Research Council shooter indicted; No hate crime or terrorism charges

Floyd Lee Corkins II, 28, of Herndon, Va., was indicted today on charges related to the August 15 shooting at the Family Research Council in Washington, D.C., that injured a security guard.

A grand jury charged Corkin with assault with intent to kill while armed and possession of a handgun during a crime of violence, along with a federal charge of interstate transportation of a firearm and ammunition. Corkin, who reportedly told the security guard “I don’t like your politics” before opening fire, was not charged with a hate crime.

At a press conference the day after the shooting, FRC President Tony Perkins said his organization does not support the “hate crime” label and said Corkin should not be charged with a hate crime.

Federal investigators had said they would investigate the shooter’s motives to determine if domestic terrorism charges were warranted. Corkins was carrying a bag with 15 Chick-fil-A sandwiches, and Traditional Values Coalition President Andrea Lafferty says authorities told her Corkins was carrying a note with contact information for her organization also.

Corkins is scheduled to be arraigned on Friday.
