Leftist Killjoys Co-Opt 'Dune', Stick Heads Up Own Arrakis Instead

For the Left, everything has to be destroyed and rebuilt to their will. Nothing can exist for the sake of existing, least of all entertainment.

So they politicize everything to advance their agenda. Even if it means destroying culture in the process (a feature, not a bug, in their eyes).

So when Bloomberg's opinion section tries to make Denis Villeneuve's Dune about, well, anything but a sci-fi space epic, it's no surprise:

Let's take a look at the logic behind this:

As you can tell from the reader numbers on my columns, it is often very difficult to get people to consume content about the climate. In other news, a climate-based film is the biggest movie in America.

Here’s how to make it make sense: If you write a news article or column about climate, the odds are strong it will be too depressing, too repetitive or too wonky to attract eyeballs. But if you make 2 Dune 2 Sandy starring Timothee Chalamet, Zendaya, Austin Butler, Florence Pugh and several other beautiful people riding cool spaceships and giant worms, people will line up to see it. It turns out the best route for delivering climate messages is often an indirect one.

First, I can't possibly imagine why it's difficult to get people to 'consume content about the climate.' The world has had a fever since I was in kindergarten (1988, for those of you wondering); acid rain was going to kill us all and by now, any costal city was supposed to be well under water.

Except we watch absolutely none of those predictions come to fruition and people like John Kerry and Barack Obama continue to live their lives without regard for the consequences they tell us are coming. Kerry jets around the globe, privately, of course and Obama bought a waterfront mansion in Martha's Vineyard.

Those are not things one does if one thinks the planet has a fever. But when the deadline for their hysterical predictions pass, they move the goal posts.

'No, no! We really mean it this time!'

To top it all off, the only 'solution' to climate change invariably seems to be us -- the little people -- making the sacrifices. We can't have gas stoves, we can't travel (even commercially), we can't own cars, we can't live in nice houses, we can't eat meat or own pets. Expensive, prohibitive carbon offset credits and taxes always impact us the most, too.

Maybe it's difficult to get people to consume climate content because people -- by and large -- don't like being spoon-fed lies. For decades.

It's also not the first time Bloomberg has tried to tie Dune to climate change.

What's the definition of insanity, again?

But I digress.

Indeed.

Dune is a fantastic story about political intrigue, power, love, and fate. What it isn't is some treatise on climate change.

It's exhausting and I'm so fed up with it. But it's the world the Left wants: everything is political. You can never escape it, and must always have a political thought in your head.

Sometimes, a gal just wants to watch Paul Atreides ride a sand worm across Arrakis.

And this is where it's so dangerous.

This politicization of movies, books, television not only creates a cultural desert (as I wrote about here), it's ultimate goal is the upheaval of current society and its culture, with the goal of supplanting it with their own Marxist garbage. This is why they retcon things like The Matrix and say it's an allegory for transgenderism, even though there was nothing in the movie to suggest that.

The other insidious part of this is their anger at the rejection of this new form of storytelling. Box office receipts for increasingly woke, poorly executed movies have been terrible. The Marvels and Madame Web are just two examples of movies with gigantic budgets and middling returns.

But rather than give audiences what they want, at least one Disney executive blamed the fans, scolding them for wanting 'regressive stereotypes' in movies.

No, we just want good stories, with good, realistic characters. We're tired of the girl-boss trope wherein any female lead has zero flaws, no internal conflict, and no character arc. We're tired of men being buffoons (or worse). And we're tired of studios taking beloved properties and destroying them.

Dune is no more about climate change than it is about ballerinas.

The reason it's been so successful is because it does all the things audiences want: tells a good story, with intriguing characters who have to grow, learn, and change, with incredible visuals  and masterful direction. It's a sci-fi movie made for adults, and audiences love it.

Amen.

So stop trying to force a political agenda, and start asking yourselves why movies like Dune are being so well received. Maybe you'll learn a thing or two.
